The 2 Districts of Ottawa Intergroup
ABOUT AA IN THE OTTAWA DISTRICT

Alcoholics Anonymous is an international fellowship of men and women who have had a drinking problem. It is nonprofessional, self-supporting, multiracial, apolitical, and available almost everywhere. There are no age or education requirements. Membership is open to anyone who wants to do something about his or her drinking problem.

General Service Structure

The organization of Alcoholics Anonymous begins with each individual group. A group sends an elected General Service Representative (GSR) the local District Committee. The GSRs at the District Committee then elect various officers, one of whom is the District Committee Member (DCM). The DCM chairs the District Committee meetings. Officers and GSRs from the Districts meet several times a year at an Area Assembly, where they once again elect officers, one of whom is called the Delegate.

Delegates from all Areas across the United States and Canada meet yearly in New York at the General Service Conference to conduct AA business. This organization, referred to as the General Service Structure, is described in the AA Service Manual.

Area and Districts

AA groups in Ottawa and surrounding communities belong to Area 83 – Eastern Ontario International. This area spans Eastern Ontario from Oakville to the Southern edge of Algonquin Park and east across the St. Lawrence River into northern New York State.

The Area 83 Committee holds its own meetings and conducts two Assemblies each year in Kingston, Ontario. At these assemblies, the DCMs and GSRs from all the districts and groups in the area discuss and vote on AA business, and elect area officers, including the Delegate, who represents the area at the annual General Service Conference in New York.

Ottawa area groups are organized into two districts each being autonomous and responsible to the people it serves. Together, they form the link between individual groups and AA as a whole, as well as provide support to AA services in our community. They are:

Local Service Committees

Local service committees, such as Public Information (PI), Cooperation with the Professional Community (CPC), Correctional Facilities and Treatment (CFT), and Archives, are supported by the three Ottawa-area Districts and fulfill key roles and outreach operations. See District Committees for more information.

Ottawa Area Intergroup

Participating groups in Ottawa have also established an Ottawa Area Intergroup, which performs functions best handled by a centralized office, such as publishing a Meeting List and Newsletter, providing a Telephone Answering Service, and operating this Website. See Intergroup Services for more information.
