Our Primary Purpose

September 2024

Highlights from the September 2024 Issue:

This issue focuses on Step Nine and the process of making direct amends. The theme emphasizes that amends are not about apology or approval, but about personal freedom—clearing guilt and changing behaviour in order to live at peace in sobriety.

“Step 9” by D.L. offers a practical and grounded reflection on making amends, including real examples of repairing harm in different situations. The piece highlights the importance of honesty, courage, and guidance from a sponsor, while reinforcing that the purpose of amends is personal healing rather than reconciliation.

“Thoughts on Step 2” by Joe F. reflects on faith and connection, exploring how trust in oneself and others builds a sense of belonging. The piece emphasizes that sharing both struggles and joy strengthens recovery and deepens spiritual experience.

“Chapter 9: To the Employer” by Joe F. offers a thoughtful reflection on isolation, fear, and the ways alcohol can shape behaviour and relationships. Drawing on Big Book discussion, the article explores the tension between wanting connection and pushing others away.

Service remains a strong theme throughout the issue, with ongoing needs highlighted for the Telephone Answering Service, Ottawa Withdrawal Management Centre, and Intergroup roles, including a call for a volunteer webmaster.

A feature on the Intergroup Office refresh highlights improvements to the physical space, reflecting continued investment in service infrastructure.

Upcoming events include the Eastern Ontario Conference “Archway to Freedom,” along with other regional gatherings, encouraging participation, fellowship, and continued service.
