Our Primary Purpose

January 2025

Highlights from the January 2025 Issue:

This issue features a reflection on Tradition One by Joe F., written through the lens of unity as a lived spiritual practice rather than a concept. The article uses a personal story about returning to a familiar meeting and revisiting early discomfort around participation to show how unity is expressed through inclusion, humility, and willingness to serve. The piece also explores the difference between rescuing and helping, and how unity is strengthened when members act from shared purpose rather than personal agenda.

The issue includes an interview with Aaron M. on navigating A.A. as a partially sighted member. He speaks about barriers faced in meetings, how fellowship and sponsorship supported his integration into the program, and practical ways groups can be more welcoming to members with low vision or blindness. He also discusses accessibility tools for literature and offers guidance on how members can interact respectfully with visually impaired participants.

“The Dry Drunk and the Sucker” by Neil offers a narrative about emotional immaturity in sobriety, using a vignette about a disruptive member to illustrate the difference between compassion and enabling. The piece discusses boundaries, emotional honesty, and the role of self-awareness in healthy fellowship.

“Thoughts on 10 Years of Sobriety” by Jeff F. reflects on late-in-life recovery, the misconceptions he carried into A.A., and the gradual shift from resignation to gratitude. The article traces sobriety as a process of connection, humility, and growth, contrasting early skepticism with the long-term gifts found through participation in the fellowship.

“Letting Go of the Rocks” continues the theme of emotional responsibility through a parable about resentment and burden-carrying, using a relatable workplace story to illustrate detachment, perspective, and shared growth in recovery.
